Amelia Island Runners had a great turnout for the Walk-It Day 5K Sunday, the culmination of the Weight Watchers Walk-It! Challenge to train for and complete a 5K walk. Running clubs throughout the country, including Amelia Island Runners, presented Walk-It Day 5K events in conjunction with Weight Watchers & the Road Runners Club of America. The Weight Watchers Walk-It Challenge encouraged people to train to finish a 5K walk or run. Some of the walkers & runners had never done that distance before, but they met the challenge, including a challenging start time of 7:30 a.m.!
The proceeds from the AIR event benefited Warrior Vacations, which provides free, well-deserved vacations for military personnel returning from Iraq & Afghanistan.
More than 100 energetic runners and walkers from throughout North Florida and South Georgia (including Callahan, Waycross, Palm Coast & other locales) signed up for the challenge! And a beautiful morning greeted them for the Walk-It Day 5K. They enjoyed warm-up exercises led by Liz Kawecki of Y Yoga, & a walk/run through scenic & shaded Fort Clinch State Park. The shade was welcome since it was warm & humid, but the atmosphere was festive & the Fernandina Pirates Club helped keep things cool by handing out water along the way!
Thanks & congratulations to everyone who participated! Special thanks is also due to all the volunteers who made it possible, including event director John McBrearty.
